Harvard Avenue Addition

Residential, In Progress

An addition to this 1900’s Victorian Brick Four-Square residence increases the shared living areas and adds two new bedroom spaces to the home. The addition is expressed on the home’s exterior as two volumes: the first volume is slightly inset from the home’s existing walls, which clearly separates the old from the new and keeps the addition secondary to the existing home. This volume houses a family room on the main level, a bedroom in the basement, and a stair hall connecting all levels of the home. The stair hall sits directly against the existing home and is flanked by generous windows at either end, which improves the home’s vertical circulation and allows natural daylight to enter both the old and new spaces.

The second volume, which contains a new principle bedroom suite, is on the upper level and cantilevers beyond the first volume to match the extents of the brick walls of the existing house. This visually simplifies the main spaces of the house to one long, rectangular mass, which then allows deck spaces, entry stairs, and a previous addition to the house to connect to the house without becoming cluttered or disjointed.
