The owner of this corner lot in Salt Lake City was seeking an in-law dwelling that could also be a future rental apartment.  Though first conceived of as a detached ADU over garage, the constraints of zoning requirements and an existing overhead power line to the neighboring properties led to a design solution that attaches to the existing home with a covered breezeway.  This approach significantly reduces the square footage and height limitations for the ADU, eliminates costly utility work, and preserves as much yard and garden space as possible.
