A design collaboration with Community Studio (Salt Lake City, UT), redevelopment of the historic Serta Mattress Building is part of a larger master plan for Station Center, one of Salt Lake City’s emerging premier urban neighborhoods located next to the historic Rio Grande Depot and adjacent to the UTA Central Station intermodal hub. The building itself is approximately 15,000 square feet total on three floors including a basement level. Though the historic shell is largely intact, new mechanical systems, structural upgrades, and improvements to the building envelope will be required. Major renovations will include a new elevator and stairs, accessible entrances, and a public deck/plaza area. The existing roof will be replaced in its entirety and may feature an occupied deck area, skylights, and photovoltaic panels. This project has received preliminary approvals from the Salt Lake City Redevelopment Agency and is in the process of securing a single major tenant or multiple tenants to inform the approach to interior design. Construction is expected to start in Spring 2017.
